The CD74HC4067 High-Speed CMOS 16-Channel Analog/Digital Multiplexer Breakout Module serves as a breakout board for the versatile 16-Channel Analog/Digital Multiplexer. This chip acts akin to a rotary switch, internally directing the common pin (COM in schematic, SIG on board) to one of the 16 channel pins (CHANxx). It seamlessly handles both digital and analog signals, with the voltage not exceeding VCC, and allows bidirectional connections. Control is facilitated by linking 4 digital outputs to the chip’s address select pins (S0-S3) and sending the desired binary address of the channel. This setup enables the connection of up to 16 sensors to the system using only 5 pins. Additionally, since the mux/demux also supports digital signals, it can be employed to transmit TTL-level serial data to or from multiple devices. For instance, it can link the TX pins of 16 devices to one RX pin on the microcontroller, with the flexibility to select any of the 16 devices for communication. Two-way communication can be achieved by adding a second board to route the microcontroller’s TX line to 16 device’s RX lines. Multiple boards can be utilized to create similar setups for I2C, SPI, etc. The CD74HC4067 internal switches are bidirectional, supporting voltages between ground and VCC, boasting low “on” resistance and low “off” leakage. To prevent crosstalk, they feature “break-before-make” switching. Additionally, the board provides access to the chip’s “enable” pin, which, when driven high, disconnects the common pin entirely (all switches “off”).
